Civil Service Club @ Loyang (Former Aloha Loyang) · Singapore, Singapore

A laid-back go to place for a slow and relaxing dinner or drinks. Diners may also want to go for a stroll after their meals at Pasir Ris Park just outside the restaurant.

First time at Lake Bled in December

Lake Bled · Bled, Slovenia

I came in December because my flight schedule said so and ended up with a version of Bled I think I prefer. The lake at night holds everything twice. The castle floodlit on its cliff doubles in the water; the Parish Church of St. Martin on the north shore doubles too; the string lights wrapped around bare trees along the promenade make the whole shoreline read like a slow-moving constellation. I walked the lake counter-clockwise from Mlino in just under two hours, gloves on, hood up, mostly alone past 6pm. The Advent market near Festival Hall is small but real — mulled wine in proper glass mugs, grilled sausages, a handful of stalls selling Slovenian honey and beeswax candles. Locals outnumbered tourists by my rough count.

Plečnik's colonnade in winter — half the city's silence

Triple Bridge · Ljubljana, Slovenia

In summer the photos all show this colonnade busy with stalls — flower sellers, cheese, baked goods spilling out toward the river. In February it's half-empty and somehow better. The arches frame the same view; the river doesn't change colour for the season; and the silence lets you see what Plečnik actually built. The arcade runs along the Ljubljanica between Triple Bridge and Dragon Bridge — long, colonnaded, double-storeyed, with the lower level cut directly into the embankment so the shopfronts open onto the water through a series of arched windows. From a bridge looking down you see them mirrored in the green water and the whole building becomes almost amphibious. Plečnik designed all of it in the 1940s — the colonnade, the embankment, the bridges that anchor each end — as a single piece of city architecture rather than three separate projects. Most visitors stop on Mesarski most for the photo and move on. Don't. Walk the upper level instead, end to end. You pass through Plečnik's pillars two by two; the river drops away on one side; the rooftops of the old town stack on the other. Twenty minutes there and twenty back gives you something a photograph can't.

St. Peter's Parish Church in Ljubljana

Cerkev Svetega Petra · Ljubljana, Slovenia

15 minutes walk along Trubarjeva cesta, past the boutiques, past the souvenir signage thinning out, to a quieter end of the city. St Peter's is a working parish church. No ticket booth, no audio guides, no signs in four languages. A few people sat scattered across the pews when I stepped in on a weekday afternoon.

Zagreb Cathedral entry blocked for restoration works

Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary · City of Zagreb, Croatia

You walk uphill from the produce stalls, the path bends past Bishop's Palace, and then the cathedral just opens up — twin spires reaching 105 metres, the kind of vertical you have to lean back for. Even from across the square it pulls the eye. In December 2025 it's still partly in scaffolding. The 2020 earthquake snapped the top off one spire and the other is being shored up, so the silhouette right now is half-restored

Slovenia's 46km of coast all leads to Piran

Piran / Pirano · Piran / Pirano, Slovenia

You can drive into Piran's main car park at the edge of the old town, pay €15 for the day, and never quite figure out where you are. The better move is to leave the car in Portorož and walk in along the seafront — twenty-five minutes, salt air, and the moment Piran's bell tower lifts into view across the bay is worth more than the parking saved. The old town is Venetian, plainly so. It was part of the Republic for five centuries and the architecture doesn't pretend otherwise. Tartini Square is a small St Mark's down to the inlaid marble compass; the cathedral's campanile is a near-copy of San Marco's. Climb it for an aerial of the whole peninsula — terracotta roofs sloping into the Adriatic, the saltpans of Sečovlje curving down toward the Croatian border. Come for a long lunch and stay through sunset. Pri Mari for fish soup and grilled squid — a locals' place, small, book ahead. Then walk the seafront out to Punta, the white lighthouse at the tip; the water is clear enough to count fish from the breakwater. Sunset hits the western wall of the old town like stage lighting. A glass of Malvazija on the harbour and you're done.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park · Lika-Senj County, Croatia

I came back in December partly to settle the score with my summer visit. The forecast said 8°C and clear; I packed merino, microspikes, and a flask. Both decisions paid off. Entrance 1 was almost empty at 9am. The ticket office was a Portacabin with one attendant, the €10 entry felt like an apology, and only trails A was officially open — about a third of what's accessible in summer. The boat across Lake Kozjak doesn't run, the shuttles don't either, and the upper-lakes plateau was roped off entirely.

Stayed 4 nights at Banyan Tree Phuket in a Banyan Pool Villa for our 5-year anniversary and honestly I'm ruined for normal hotel rooms now. The villa is a whole compound with a private outdoor pool you can actually swim laps in, with daybeds, indoor and outdoor showers, and a soaking bathtub that looks out at the garden. We barely left for the first 24 hours just floating in the pool with the welcome champagne.
