I crossed it on a grey afternoon, the sky a flat white, and the Campanile read like a single brick stroke against it. The basilica's five domes sit low and dark below, two iron crosses out front leaning slightly toward each other. The crowd was there but thin enough that you could take in the arches one at a time instead of through other people's shoulders.
