The Roman Amphitheater of Lecce sits right in the middle of the lively Piazza Sant'Oronzo, and it’s honestly one of the coolest things to see because it’s tucked right into the modern city. Imagine just grabbing a coffee or doing some shopping and then realizing you’re standing next to a structure that dates back to the 2nd century A.D. What’s most impressive is that only about a third of the amphitheater has actually been excavated; the rest is still sitting underneath the surrounding buildings. It gives the whole site such a cool, mysterious vibe. It’s not just a dusty old ruin; it’s a living part of the city’s heart.

Traveler Tips

Try to walk by once the sun sets. The amphitheater is beautifully lit up at night, and it feels much more atmospheric and magical than it does during the bright, busy daytime. You also don’t need a ticket to walk around the perimeter of the piazza and get a great view of the ruins from above. It’s perfect for those classic vacation photos.
