The cathedral was Arnolfo's design — he began it in 1296, more than a century before Brunelleschi solved the dome. They sit in matching niches on the south wall now: Arnolfo holding his plans, Brunelleschi a few metres along, looking up at the result. He doesn't get the same crowd.
